  • Ensure you have proper tools for checking tire pressure and fluid levels.

Engine Compartment & Fluids

  • Open hood safely and secure with proper hood prop or latch mechanism.
  • Check engine oil level using dipstick when engine is cool and level.
  • Inspect oil condition for color, consistency, and contamination indicators.
  • Verify coolant level in overflow reservoir and check for proper antifreeze mixture.
  • Examine coolant condition and look for rust, oil, or other contamination signs.
  • Check brake fluid reservoir level and ensure fluid is clear or light amber.
  • Inspect power steering fluid level and condition for proper operation.
  • Verify transmission fluid level and color according to manufacturer specifications.
  • Look for fluid leaks under vehicle including oil, coolant, brake, or hydraulic fluid.
  • Inspect belts and hoses for cracks, fraying, proper tension, and secure connections.

Lights & Electrical Systems

Tire & Wheel Inspection

  • Check tire pressure on all tires including spare using accurate pressure gauge.
  • Compare pressure readings to manufacturer specifications on tire sidewall or door placard.
  • Inspect tire tread depth using penny test or professional tread depth gauge.
  • Ensure front tires have minimum 4/32" tread and rear tires have 2/32" minimum.
  • Look for cuts, punctures, bulges, or sidewall damage that could cause failure.
  • Check for irregular wear patterns that may indicate alignment or suspension problems.
  • Verify all wheel lug nuts are present, tight, and show no signs of loosening.
  • Inspect wheel rims for cracks, dents, or other structural damage or distortion.
  • Check valve stems for cracks, damage, or air leaks that could affect pressure.
  • Ensure tire sizes match vehicle requirements and are appropriate for load rating.

Brake System & Safety Equipment

  • Test brake pedal feel ensuring firm pedal with proper travel distance.
  • Check that brake pedal does not feel spongy or sink to floor under pressure.
  • Test parking brake to ensure it holds vehicle securely on incline and releases completely.
  • For air brake systems, verify proper pressure buildup and pressure holding capability.
  • Listen for air leaks in brake system and check low air pressure warning devices.
  • Inspect brake lines and air hoses for damage, wear, or improper routing.
  • Test seat belt operation ensuring proper latching, tension, and release mechanism.
  • Check fire extinguisher is properly charged, mounted securely, and inspection tag current.
  • Verify emergency reflective triangles or flares are present and in good condition.
  • Inspect first aid kit if required and ensure contents are complete and current.

Body, Mirrors & Documentation
