Construction Safety Checklist

General checklist to identify safety risks, PPE compliance, and signage on construction sites. Ensure worker safety and OSHA compliance through systematic safety audits.

SAFETY FIRST PRIORITY

All construction activities must comply with OSHA regulations and company safety policies. Stop work immediately if unsafe conditions are identified.

OSHA Compliance Requirements

This checklist addresses key OSHA 29 CFR 1926 construction standards including fall protection, PPE, hazard communication, and electrical safety requirements.

Pre-Work Site Assessment

  • Conduct daily safety briefing with all workers before starting any work activities.
  • Review job hazard analysis (JHA) and safety data sheets for all materials being used.
  • Verify all required permits are obtained and properly posted at work site.
  • Check weather conditions and postpone work if conditions are unsafe for operations.
  • Inspect work area for overhead hazards including power lines and falling objects.
  • Identify and mark all underground utilities before any excavation or drilling activities.
  • Establish safe pedestrian and vehicle traffic routes around the construction site.
  • Verify emergency contact information and evacuation procedures are posted and communicated.
  • Check that first aid stations and emergency equipment are accessible and properly stocked.
  • Document site conditions and safety concerns in daily inspection log for record keeping.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Compliance

  • Verify all workers are wearing proper hard hats that meet ANSI Z89.1 standards.
  • Check that safety glasses or face shields are worn and in good condition.
  • Inspect high-visibility vests or clothing for proper fit and reflective material condition.
  • Ensure safety boots with slip-resistant soles are worn by all personnel on site.

  • Check that respiratory protection is properly fitted and maintained for dust or chemical exposure.
  • Inspect fall protection harnesses and lanyards for wear, cuts, or other damage.
  • Verify gloves appropriate for specific tasks are worn and in serviceable condition.
  • Check that PPE is properly cleaned, maintained, and stored when not in use.
  • Document any PPE deficiencies and ensure immediate replacement of damaged equipment.

Hazard Identification & Control

  • Identify and assess slip, trip, and fall hazards throughout the work area.
  • Check for proper housekeeping including debris removal and clean walkways.
  • Inspect electrical hazards including exposed wiring, damaged cords, and GFCI protection.
  • Verify proper storage and handling of hazardous materials and chemicals on site.
  • Check for struck-by hazards from moving equipment, falling objects, or swinging loads.
  • Inspect caught-in or caught-between hazards from machinery, equipment, or structures.
  • Assess ergonomic hazards from repetitive motions, heavy lifting, or awkward positions.
  • Check environmental hazards including heat stress, cold exposure, and air quality.
  • Verify fire prevention measures and proper storage of flammable materials.
  • Document all identified hazards and ensure appropriate control measures are implemented.

Equipment & Tool Safety

  • Inspect all power tools for damaged cords, proper grounding, and safety guards.
  • Check hand tools for damage, proper condition, and appropriate use for assigned tasks.
  • Verify ladder safety including proper setup, condition, and three-point contact rule.
  • Inspect scaffolding for proper assembly, guardrails, and load capacity compliance.
  • Check heavy equipment operation including daily inspections and operator certifications.
  • Verify lockout/tagout procedures are followed for equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Inspect lifting equipment including cranes, hoists, and rigging for proper certification.
  • Check machine guarding is in place and functioning properly on all equipment.
  • Verify equipment operators have proper training and certification for their assignments.
  • Document equipment inspection results and maintenance needs for follow-up action.

Safety Signage & Communication

  • Verify required safety signs are properly posted and visible throughout work areas.
  • Check that danger, warning, and caution signs meet OSHA requirements for size and color.
  • Inspect barricades and barriers for proper placement around hazardous areas.
  • Verify exit routes are clearly marked and unobstructed for emergency evacuation.
  • Check that material safety data sheets (MSDS) are accessible for all chemicals on site.
  • Ensure emergency contact numbers are posted in visible locations throughout the site.
  • Verify toolbox talk records are maintained and safety communications are documented.
  • Check that incident reporting procedures are posted and understood by all workers.
