Wheel Loader Daily Walkaround – Procedure Guide

Follow this checklist procedure for daily inspections to ensure safety and peak loader performance.

Detailed Inspection Procedures

Follow these step-by-step procedures for key inspection areas on your wheel loader to ensure thoroughness and consistency.

Hydraulic System Inspection

  • Park loader on level ground with implements lowered
  • Ensure hydraulic oil is at normal operating temperature
  • Check hydraulic oil level in sight glass or dipstick
  • Inspect oil color and clarity for contamination
  • Check hoses for abrasion, bulges, and leaks
  • Inspect cylinder rods for scoring, pitting, or damage
  • Look for leaks at all fittings and connections
  • Check hydraulic filter restriction indicators
  • Inspect hydraulic coolers for debris and damage
  • Document any findings in maintenance log

Articulation Joint Inspection

  • Park on level ground, shut off engine, and apply parking brake
  • Place articulation lock bar in position if equipped
  • Clean articulation area thoroughly before inspection
  • Check for proper lubrication at all grease points
  • Inspect center hinge pin for excessive play or movement
  • Check steering cylinders for leaks and secure mounting
  • Look for cracks in frame near articulation point
  • Inspect oscillation joint if equipped
  • Check condition of articulation stops
  • Remove lock bar and verify proper joint movement

Tire Inspection Process

  • Conduct inspection when tires are cool
  • Visually check inflation of all tires
  • Inspect for cuts, bulges, and punctures on tread and sidewalls
  • Check tread depth at multiple points around tire
  • Look for embedded objects in tread (rocks, metal)
  • Inspect tire wear pattern for alignment/loading issues
  • Check valve stems for damage and ensure caps are present
  • Inspect rims for cracks, dents, or deformation
  • Verify all wheel nuts are present and tight
  • Document and report any significant findings

Bucket & Attachment Inspection

  • Lower bucket or attachment to ground
  • Shut off engine and relieve hydraulic pressure
  • Check bucket/attachment for cracks, especially at high-stress points
  • Inspect cutting edge or teeth for wear and security
  • Check side cutters and wear plates for condition
  • Inspect pin connections for wear and proper retention
  • If quick coupler equipped, verify locking mechanism function
  • Check hydraulic couplings for leaks and damage
  • Inspect lift arm linkage for wear and lubrication
  • Document and report any issues requiring maintenance
