Tower Crane Monthly Safety Inspection – Procedure Guide

Follow this structured procedure to maintain safety, performance, and compliance of tower cranes.

Detailed Inspection Procedures

Follow these step-by-step procedures for properly inspecting critical components of your tower crane.

Slew Ring Inspection Protocol

  • Clean area around slew ring to remove dirt and debris
  • Check for proper lubrication and add grease if needed
  • Inspect all slew ring bolts for proper torque (use calibrated torque wrench)
  • Mark bolts to identify any movement between inspections
  • Examine slew ring teeth for wear, damage, or abnormal patterns
  • Check for cracks using appropriate non-destructive testing
  • Measure and record bearing backlash/clearance per manufacturer specs
  • Verify smooth rotation under no-load conditions

Wire Rope Assessment Method

  • Clean rope sections to be inspected of dirt and excess lubricant
  • Inspect entire length of wire rope visually and by hand
  • Look for broken wires, corrosion, kinks, bird-caging, or crushing
  • Pay special attention to sections running over sheaves or drums
  • Measure rope diameter at multiple points to check for reduction
  • Examine end connections and terminations for security
  • Check for proper lubrication along entire length
  • Document findings with photographs of any defects

Tower Bolted Connection Check

  • Visually inspect all tower section connections
  • Check for missing, loose, or damaged bolts and nuts
  • Verify torque on sampling of bolts with calibrated wrench
  • Look for elongated bolt holes indicating movement
  • Inspect for cracking or deformation around connection points
  • Check for proper alignment of tower sections
  • Verify that locking devices or safety pins are in place
  • Document any deficiencies with detailed notes and photos

Load Moment Indicator Testing

  • Verify calibration records are current and accurate
  • Use known test weights (certified and documented)
  • Position test load at various radii per test procedure
  • Compare indicator readings with actual load and radius
  • Test overload warning and cutout systems
  • Verify alarm systems activate at appropriate thresholds
  • Test function cuts out at maximum capacity plus allowance
  • Document all test results with specific values
