Skid Steer Loader Daily Safety Inspection – Procedure Guide

Follow this procedure to ensure safe, reliable daily operations on construction and job sites

Detailed Inspection Procedures

Follow these step-by-step procedures for properly inspecting critical components of your skid steer loader.

Operator Presence System Test

  • Park machine on level ground with lift arms lowered
  • Start engine and engage hydraulic controls
  • Fasten seat belt and lower restraint bar (if equipped)
  • Raise lift arms slightly off ground
  • Without turning off engine, unfasten seat belt and attempt to rise from seat
  • Verify hydraulic functions are disabled/locked
  • Return to seat, fasten belt, and verify controls resume function
  • Test parking brake by attempting to drive with brake engaged

Quick-Attach Mechanism Inspection

  • Park on level surface with attachment resting on ground
  • Turn off engine and relieve hydraulic pressure
  • Visually inspect quick-attach mechanism for debris/damage
  • Check locking pins are fully extended and secured
  • Examine attachment mounting plates for cracks/deformation
  • Connect hydraulic couplings, verifying clean connection
  • Start machine and slightly lift attachment
  • Tilt attachment forward/backward to verify secure connection

Hydraulic System Evaluation

  • Check hydraulic oil level when machine is cool and arms lowered
  • Inspect all visible hoses for rubbing, chafing, or leaks
  • Look for wet spots or stains indicating hidden leaks
  • Examine hydraulic cylinders for rod damage and seal leakage
  • Check hydraulic couplers for damage and proper connection
  • Verify hydraulic filter indicator is in normal range
  • Start engine and cycle all functions slowly, listening for abnormal noises
  • Check for drift when holding loads or attachments in raised position

Track/Tire Assessment Method

  • For tracked machines, check tension per manufacturer specs
  • Inspect track for missing/damaged lugs or cleats
  • Look for cuts, embedded objects, or excessive wear
  • For wheeled machines, verify tire pressure when cool
  • Examine tire sidewalls for cuts, cracks, or bulges
  • Check tread depth and pattern for uneven wear
  • Ensure all lug nuts/bolts are tight and none are missing
  • Inspect rims for damage, cracks, or deformation
