Pre-Drilling Safety Guidelines
Before commencing drilling operations, follow these critical safety procedures to ensure a safe working environment for all personnel on site.
Site Assessment
- Verify underground utility clearance
- Check for overhead power lines (maintain min. 20ft distance)
- Assess ground conditions for stability
- Identify and mark potential hazards
- Establish exclusion zones around drill rig
- Verify adequate workspace for rod handling
- Check for environmental concerns (dust, noise)
Personnel Briefing
- Conduct pre-shift safety meeting
- Review emergency procedures and signals
- Confirm all personnel have proper PPE
- Establish clear communication protocols
- Define individual roles and responsibilities
- Review safe approach zones for rig
- Discuss specific hazards for current operation
Rig Positioning
- Position rig on level, stable ground
- Deploy outriggers/stabilizers fully
- Use adequate cribbing under outriggers if needed
- Check rig levelness with inclinometer
- Ensure adequate clearance for mast raising
- Verify safe distance from excavations/trenches
- Establish clear access paths to/from rig
Drilling Tool Inspection
- Inspect all drill rods for damage/wear
- Check bit condition and secure attachment
- Verify all tool joint threads are clean and undamaged
- Ensure tools are properly rated for the job
- Verify handling tools are in good condition
- Inspect all connection points and adapters
- Arrange tools in proper sequence for operation
