Detailed Inspection Procedures
Follow these step-by-step procedures for properly inspecting critical components of your mobile crane.
Wire Rope Inspection Protocol
- Wear gloves to protect hands during inspection
- Ensure crane is powered down and properly secured
- Check entire rope length by uncable or boom extension
- Look for visible broken wires (6 randomly in one lay or 3 in one strand)
- Check for reduction in rope diameter (more than 5% of nominal)
- Inspect for kinking, crushing, bird-caging or core protrusion
- Examine end connections for proper seating and damage
- Verify proper spooling pattern on drum (no crossovers)
Load Moment Indicator Test
- Verify current calibration status and date
- Set crane in a known configuration with outriggers extended
- Verify correct configuration is entered in LMI system
- Lift a known weight at a known radius
- Compare displayed load with actual known weight
- Test at minimum 3 different radii if possible
- Verify warning alarms activate at proper thresholds
- Check motion cut functions activate at appropriate limits
Outrigger Inspection & Test
- Inspect outrigger beams for straightness and damage
- Check outrigger cylinders for leaks and rod damage
- Verify outrigger controls function smoothly
- Extend outriggers fully and check level indicators
- Confirm outrigger locks engage properly when extended
- Check outrigger pads for damage and deformation
- Verify outrigger holding valves prevent drift
- Ensure proper stowage and locking when retracted
Anti-Two-Block System Check
- Visually inspect A2B switch and weight assembly
- Check electrical connections and wiring condition
- Verify flag or weight moves freely
- With engine running, slowly raise hook block
- Confirm alarm activates when weight is contacted
- Verify hoist up function stops automatically
- Test telescope extend function stops if applicable
- Check bypass switch functions properly (if equipped)
