Dump Truck Preventive Maintenance – Procedure Guide

Follow this procedure to ensure optimal truck performance and compliance through monthly inspections.

Detailed Maintenance Procedures

Follow these step-by-step procedures for key maintenance tasks on your dump truck to ensure proper service and maximum component life.

Hydraulic System Service

  • Park truck on level ground with dump body lowered
  • Ensure hydraulic oil is at operating temperature
  • Shut off engine and relieve hydraulic pressure
  • Clean area around fill cap and filter before removal
  • Drain hydraulic oil into appropriate container
  • Replace hydraulic filters as specified
  • Refill with proper hydraulic fluid to correct level
  • Start engine and cycle hydraulic system slowly
  • Check for leaks at all connections
  • Recheck fluid level and adjust if necessary

Brake System Adjustment

  • Park on level surface, chock wheels, release brakes
  • Verify air system at full pressure (120+ psi)
  • Measure free play at chamber pushrod (should be 3/8"-1/2")
  • Adjust slack adjusters if free play exceeds specifications
  • Turn adjuster until resistance is felt, then back off
  • Verify proper adjustment with measurement
  • Check brake shoe to drum clearance (should be minimal)
  • Perform brake timing test on all axles
  • Verify brake balance by testing on safe surface
  • Document all adjustments in maintenance log

Dump Body Inspection

  • Clean dump body thoroughly to reveal potential issues
  • Raise body fully and secure with safety props
  • Inspect body for cracks, especially at stress points
  • Check hinge points for wear, lubrication, integrity
  • Examine hydraulic cylinder mounts for cracks
  • Inspect cylinder rods for damage and scoring
  • Check tailgate hinges, pins, latches for wear
  • Verify tailgate seal condition and effectiveness
  • Inspect body to frame mounting points
  • Test body operation through complete cycle

Cooling System Service

  • Ensure engine is cold before beginning
  • Relieve cooling system pressure carefully
  • Drain coolant into appropriate container
  • Flush system with clean water until clear
  • Inspect all hoses for cracks, soft spots, leaks
  • Check radiator fins for damage and clean as needed
  • Replace thermostat if required by service schedule
  • Fill system with proper coolant/water mixture
  • Bleed air from system at high points
  • Pressure test system for leaks before operation
