Follow these step-by-step procedures for key inspection areas on your crawler excavator to ensure thoroughness and consistency.

Undercarriage Inspection

  • Park excavator on level, firm ground with bucket grounded
  • Clean undercarriage thoroughly before inspection
  • Check track tension by measuring sag (refer to manual)
  • Inspect each track shoe and connecting pin for damage
  • Examine drive sprockets for tooth wear and damage
  • Check idlers for smooth rotation and seal integrity
  • Inspect all carrier rollers and track rollers for wear
  • Look for oil leaks from roller seals and final drives
  • Check track frame for cracks, bending, or damage
  • Document any abnormal wear patterns for monitoring

Hydraulic System Inspection

  • Park on level ground with all attachments lowered
  • Check hydraulic oil level in sight glass when cold
  • Inspect oil for discoloration, cloudiness, or debris
  • Examine all visible hydraulic hoses for wear or leaks
  • Inspect cylinder rods for scoring, pitting, or damage
  • Check for leaks at all cylinder seals (boom, arm, bucket)
  • Look for leaks at swing motor and travel motors
  • Check hydraulic filter restriction indicators
  • Inspect hydraulic tank breather for clogging
  • Verify all hydraulic fittings are tight and not leaking

Attachment Inspection

  • Lower bucket to ground and relieve hydraulic pressure
  • Check bucket teeth, adapters, and cutting edge wear
  • Inspect bucket for cracks, especially at stress points
  • Check bucket side cutters and wear plates
  • Inspect all pins and bushings at boom-arm-bucket joints
  • Check quick coupler locking mechanism if equipped
  • Look for cracks in boom structure, especially at pivot points
  • Inspect arm (stick) for damage, bends, or cracks
  • Check boom and arm cylinders for leaks and damage
  • Verify all grease fittings are functioning and lubricated

Engine Compartment Inspection

  • Ensure engine is off and cool before inspection
  • Check engine oil level on dipstick (cold or warm per manual)
  • Inspect coolant recovery bottle level (cold check)
  • Examine radiator and oil cooler for debris and damage
  • Check fan belt tension and condition
  • Inspect all visible hoses for cracks, leaks, or swelling
  • Verify air filter restriction indicator status
  • Drain water separator if water is visible
  • Check battery terminals for corrosion and tightness
  • Inspect wiring harness for damage or loose connections
