Concrete Pump Truck Operation – Procedure Guide

Use this checklist daily to inspect boom systems, hydraulic units, and critical safety mechanisms.

Critical Safety Procedures

Follow these step-by-step procedures for key safety aspects of concrete pump truck operation.

Power Line Safety Protocol

  • Survey site for overhead power lines before positioning pump truck
  • Identify voltage level of power lines if possible
  • Maintain minimum 20-foot clearance for all power lines
  • Increase clearance to 50+ feet for lines over 350kV
  • Position dedicated power line spotter with radio communication
  • Mark safe operating zones with cones, flags, or tape
  • Maintain continuous communication with spotter during operation
  • Stop operations if clearance cannot be maintained
  • Create written power line safety plan if working near lines
  • Train all personnel on electrical hazards and emergency procedures

Outrigger Setup Protocol

  • Assess ground conditions for adequate bearing capacity
  • Calculate required area of support based on ground conditions
  • Place outrigger pads on level, compacted surface
  • Ensure pads are properly sized (min. 3x area of outrigger foot)
  • Use properly constructed cribbing on soft or uneven ground
  • Stack cribbing in alternating layers for stability
  • Fully extend all outriggers to maximum width
  • Raise truck to level position using outrigger controls
  • Verify level with bubble levels in multiple directions
  • Recheck outrigger setup throughout operation for sinking

Blockage Clearing Protocol

  • Stop pumping immediately if blockage is suspected
  • Shift pump into reverse to relieve pressure
  • Switch off pump and engine
  • Communicate blockage to all personnel in work area
  • Establish exclusion zone around pipeline system
  • Don appropriate PPE (face shield, gloves, protective clothing)
  • Confirm pressure is relieved before dismantling pipeline
  • Disconnect pipeline only at clamps, never at blockage point
  • Direct pipe away from personnel when disconnecting
  • Report and document all blockage incidents for review

Clean-Out Safety Protocol

  • Establish containment area for concrete washout
  • Ensure EPA/local compliance for concrete waste disposal
  • Notify all personnel that clean-out is beginning
  • Remove end hose and install clean-out catcher
  • Insert appropriately sized sponge ball into system
  • Maintain exclusion zone around discharge end
  • Start pump at slow speed for clean-out process
  • Never look directly into end of pressurized pipe
  • Continue water flow until discharge runs clear
  • Confirm retrieval of clean-out ball before disassembly
